Dr Sylvia McKenna joined Wheaton Hall medical practice in 2004, after graduating from medicine at Trinity College Dublin in 2000 and completing GP training in the North East in 2004. She became a partner in Wheaton Hall in 2005.
Sylvia has special interests to include, women’s health, family planning, dermatology, minor surgery, GP training and ongoing medical education. Her interest in dermatology started when she attained a higher diploma in dermatology with University College Dublin and the Mater Hospital in 2008. She underwent further training in the area of skin surgery and dermoscopy (use of a skin microscope to aid with diagnosis of skin lesions) in 2010 and 2015 respectively. With these skills she set up the minor surgery and skin clinic at Wheaton Hall. Sylvia worked on the committee of the Primary Care Surgical Association from 2013-2017 in an effort to promote community surgery nationwide.
Wheaton Hall Medical Practice was accredited as a training practice, accepting registrars (qualified doctors who are in training to become a GP) since 2003 and Sylvia was appointed GP Trainer in 2006. In her spare time, she leads an educational group for GPs, the Dundalk CME Group. Sylvia spends her remaining free time with her husband and 2 children, where they live in Dundalk. She enjoys Yoga, running and tennis to unwind after a busy week.
